All about Stainless Steel Angles

Stainless steel angles, both laser fused and hot rolled, are a popular structural shape that see many uses and applications in the steel industry. Stainless Structurals can produce angle sizes from a 3/16” thickness all the way up to a 1.5” thickness with a full penetration weld. Profile sizes also range from 1” to 20” in various grades. With cost effective hot rolled equal angle and unequal angle available as well as the customization and flexibility of laser fused technology, Stainless Structurals can provide an almost limitless array of options for your ongoing or upcoming job.

Production Processes

The two main production methods of stainless steel angles are hot rolling and laser welding. Hot rolling allows for a more cost effect way of producing stainless steel structural profiles. We stock many industry standard stainless steel hot rolled angle sizes from 2” up to 6” in size, both in equal and unequal profile shapes. Hot rolled material has a rounded radii, so if your project calls for tapered edges or rounded corners, we can provide what is needed near immediately. For example, a popular size is a 3”x2”x1/4”, which is readily available in bulk quantity.

If your project calls for a larger or more creative size or a profile with sharp, square corners, we also offer laser fused stainless steel angles. Laser fused stainless steel angles are made by taking two laser cut flat plates and running them through our laser welding line to create a monolithic, homogenous piece of angle iron with strength qualities equal to or surpassing typical hot rolled or extruded material. Like certain hot rolled stainless steel angle sizes, we stock common sizes of laser fused angle such as 6”x4”x1/2”.

Lastly, we can also process stainless steel angle. This final method simply takes an existing hot rolled  or laser fused stainless steel angle size and processes it down to a custom size. For instance, processed 3″x2-1/2″x1/4” angles are made from 3″x3″x1/4” angles. The angles are saw cut and machine straightened to meet ASTM A484 tolerances.

Stainless Steel Angle Grades and Applications

Stainless Structurals can laser fuse stainless streel angle iron in many different stainless grades. The two most popular grades are 304L and 316L. Other grades that are possible include but are not limited to: AL6XN, C276, 254 SMO, 305, 308, 309, 310S, 314, 316Ti, 317, 321, RA330, 347, 410S, Inconel 601, 604, and 625, and Alloy 600.

304L stainless steel angle is typically used in indoor applications where the material will not be exposed to an overwhelming amount of corrosion whereas 316L is a more popular choice in outdoor, marine, and industrial applications due to its corrosion resistant properties. Depending on what your job calls for, Stainless Structurals can offer stock or custom product to meet your needs.

Custom Stainless Steel Angles and More

As stated earlier, Stainless Structurals can custom produce unique and creative shapes for your job. From full penetration thicknesses ranging from 3/16” to 1.5” and angle profile dimensions from 1” to 20”, we have the capabilities to produce exactly to your requirements. Unlike hot rolled angles, our laser fused stainless steel angles have sharp, square corners and a consistent, minute weld seam with no filler material. Our lasers melt the parent material down to its core to create monolithic profiles. In addition, unlike standard hot rolled lengths, we can offer laser fused lengths from 10’ to 45’ in length. Our neat, uniform look coupled with the customization your job calls for will be suitable for any structural or architecturally exposed requisite. Contact our team today for more information.
