How to fit magnetic catches to cupboard doors

Sometimes cabinet cupboards open on their own when they are not properly closed. Sometimes young children are capable of opening cupboards that they should not. Magnetic catches are great to prevent both of these situations from happening.

Magnetic door catches are small pieces of hardware that consist of a magnetic body and a metal striking plate. These use magnetic force to hold the strike plate together with the body, ensuring these are held together. This latching mechanism also offers a certain level of pull pressure to open the cupboard doors, preventing young children from opening cupboards and cabinets.

Which magnetic door catch to buy?

If you are looking for a magnetic door catch, browse our range of door catches. Magnetic catches vary in size, design, finish and holding force. So, it is essential to choose the right one to suit your requirements. For instance, the Black Magnetic Catch is a single magnetic catch and features a holding force of approximately 3.5-6kg.

There are single magnetic catches and double magnetic catches. Single catches feature one striking plate whilst double catches have two striking plates. Single magnetic catches are designed for one-door cupboards and double magnetic catches are designed for two-door cupboards.

How to fit a magnetic door catch.

Once you’ve picked the right door catch, it is time to fit it into your cupboard. You can easily install a magnetic door catch during an afternoon – all you need is some careful measuring, basic woodworking skills and, of course, a free afternoon.

Materials:

  • Magnetic catch
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Screws

Step 1. Firstly, you will have to determine the right place to install the catch. You should pick a location that will not create an obstruction when accessing the cabinet. The lower and upper corner opposite the hinges is often the best location.

Step 2. Place the catch on the place you want to attach it and mark the location with a pencil. Close the door and mark the location for the striking plate that aligns with the catch.

Step 3. Place the magnetic catch against the mark inside the cupboard and mark the screw holes. Remove the catch and drill pilot holes.

Step 4. Attach the catch by fastening the screws in place with a screwdriver.

Step 5. Place the striking place against the mark on the inside of the door. Mark the screw holes and drill the pilot holes.

Step 6. Attach the striking plate and ensure the two pieces align perfectly.
